The History of Rosewood Furniture

Classical Chinese rosewood furniture will last for hundreds of years if well taken care of.  Antique rosewood furniture today date back to the early to mid-Ming dynasty.  Most of these hardwood furniture pieces are kept in the Forbidden City, Beijing but you will also find many of these pieces in public areas and museums, dating back to more than two hundred years ago.

Knowledgeable experts agree that the mid-Ming and early Qing dynasties are the source of classical Chinese rosewood furniture.  They mixed both technical precision mixed with expressive artistic visions symbolizing life, nature and society.  During the mid to late Qing dynasty, rosewood furniture began being used in more formal settings and their designs grew in depth became more complex and detailed.

It is very evident people’s tastes have helped mold classical Chinese hardwood furniture from the Ming dynasty to present day.  Today’s Chinese hardwood furniture has been influenced by Western style furniture and incorporate new modern forms and structures that suit contemporary preferences.
